Owen Picton was Warden of the Carmarthen Further Education Centre; his passing deprived the Youth Opera of a good friend and tireless worker in the interest of young people. Our 1987 “West Side Story” programme paid tribute to his contribution and, in his memory, the Owen Picton Shield was inaugurated to be awarded, annually, to the best performer. In 2005 the Owen Picton Memorial Shield was succeeded by The President of Youth Opera Shield.
