Young stars shine in firm favourite
The curtain came down on Saturday evening at the Lyric Theatre for the last time after a week’s successful run of The Sound of Music. Performed by members of Carmarthen Youth Opera, the musical has proved to be as popular as ever. Some might remember it last time round. The Lyric was packed and it was great to see the town’s theatre full of people watching live performance and music.
The main role of Maria was played by 20 year old Georgina Tipping, who had the unenviable task of performing the iconic title song on her own at the start of the show. She dashed forward and flung out her arms in the style of Julie Andrews and carried the show with her strong performance. Matching her was Liam Reilly as Captain VonTrapp. It is hard to believe he is only 16 given his presence on stage and clear talent.
Special praise must go to Gavyn Brewster as Uncle Max and the exceptional performance of MeganThomas as Von Trapp’s brief love interest ElsaSchraeder. The pair lifted the entire performance and added a different element to the show. There were other sterling performances from Heini Lloyd, as the eldest Von Trapp girl, Cuan Rowlands, as Rolf Gruber, and Tom Goodrige as the butler. Anwen Price sang powerfully as the mother abbess and there was an excellent performance by her sisterhood, including Amelia Cox, Rebecca Miles and Anya Maynard.
All but forgotten and out of sight were the orchestra, who deserve praise for carrying the entire show.Taking it all together, with the sets, costumes and directing, the remarkably young age of the cast and the months of work, the Youth Opera are to be commended for their efforts.

Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall’s patronage of Carmarthen Youth Opera, her first in Wales, was announced on the 30th June 2010. In celebration of the occasion the company presented a private performance for her, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and invited guests at the Lyric Theatre Carmarthen. Following the performance the royal couple were invited on stage to meet members of the group and to unveil a commemorative plaque. Her Royal Highness was particularly delighted with the youngest members and congratulated them personally. Their Royal Highnesses are both great supporters of the arts and regularly attend concerts and theatre shows, often fundraising events for charities with which they are affiliated. The Duchess’s interest in the arts is reflected in some of the other patronages: the London Chamber Orchestra, the New Queen’s Hall Orchestra, The Theatre Royal Bath Royal, Elmhurst School for Dance, Tetbury Film Society, Unicorn Theatre for Children and the restored Georgian Theatre Royal, in Richmond, Yorkshire. We are deeply honoured and proud to have this wonderful member of the Royal family as our Patron. To find out more about Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall visit her official website at
